Iowa? [Wednesday Dec 16th, 2009]

veganpeople

[devolute]
So I'm thinking of movie to Iowa to do an AmeriCorps program. I will end up in either Cedar Rapids or Cedar Falls. I've looked on Happy Cow, and I know the vegan-friendly restaurant options will be limited. I'm wondering if anybody has been to/lives in one of these towns and can tell me if I'll be able to find veg items at a grocery store (perhaps there are co-ops?), or if I'll have to order online or something. I lived in rural Italy for a bit and I never found tofu or tempeh or any soy alternatives (besides milk and the sometimes egg-free gelato), but I was surrounded by fresh produce (it was spring) so I didn't really care. Otherwise, I've mostly only lived in Portland and Eugene as a vegan, both of which have TONS of vegan food. I can't imagine not being able to find nutritional yeast and Tofutti cream cheese at the supermarket!

If you're not from Iowa, perhaps some of you still have experience living in towns without a lot of good organic food and vegan alternatives? What did you do?

Thanks!

how much protein to eat? [Thursday Dec 17th, 2009]

veganpeople

[kaptnjack]
hello all you lovely vegan people,

I just formulated a basic meal plan using http://www.dietitian.com/calchelp.php it tells you how much of what particular food group you need each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

it says I need 100 grams of protein a day...this is really confusing to me. i thought you were supposed to eat between 30-50 grams at most, and eating a lot more than that could be dangerous.
Should I follow their advice and eat 100 grams a day? Or are they mad?

here's what was calculated for me fat, protein, and carb wise;

Fat grams: 67 grams - 28%
Protein grams: 100 grams - 21%
Carbohydrate grams: 250 grams - 51%

State-Level "Eco-Terror" Legislation Pushed by Corporate Front Groups [Tuesday Dec 15th, 2009]

The National Lawyers Guild has a new report on state-level versions of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act that have been popping up around the country. As I’ve reported here previously, on laws such as the California Animal Enterprise Protection Act, they use sweeping, overly broad definitions of terrorism that are, in some cases, even worse than the federal law. (Here’s one of my all-time favorite blog posts in which a Tennessee lawmaker describes how similar legislation is needed to combat “left-wing eco-greenies.”

Alternative to Ensure? [Tuesday Dec 15th, 2009]

veganpeople

[mangiati_vivi]
Hey folks - I looked around, and didn't see an answer to this one, so hopefully ya'll will be able to help me out.

My dad has been steadily cutting animal-based foods out of his diet for awhile now (hasn't eaten red meat in years, no chicken for months and months, and he never liked to drink milk in the first place, heh) but he recently borrowed my copy of The China Study, and now is looking to get rid of the last dairy products he consumes - Ensure protein drink, and Yoplait Digestive Health Yogurt.

I know that there are plenty of soy-based yogurts for him to try, but what should I suggest to replace the Ensure? I did a few searches, and I can't find anything specific. Unfortunately, this isn't something he can just stop using - he eats like a bird, and it helps him maintain a healthy weight. So, I wonder if you fine folks could suggest some products for me to pass along to him.

Thanks!

I'm noticing a whole lot more food products that specifically say 'suitable for vegans' on the package at the regular old grocery store. It makes me feel happy :]

How about you? Do you think there is more vegan food available now than a few years ago?

Being Vocally and Publicly Vegan [Monday Dec 14th, 2009]

veganpeople

[____hissunshine]
I have a problem being vocal about my veganism. I feel bad asking for special food at restaurants, and answering questions to strangers. I usually say the least as I can. I know it is my responsibility to speak up, and I do to my family and friends, but not anyone else. Today I really was disappointed in myself.

My Bichon Frise, Faith, (4 years old), always had food problems. She never was happy and healthy until I became Vegan, and then she became Vegan. Even my omni-rooomates dog tries to steal her food. She went to the vet today for an ear infection (she is prone to overgrowing yeast) and the vet wanted to give her a chicken treat before she left. I told her she doesn't really like treats (stupid I know! What dog doesn't like treats?) and she was like oh she'll like this and gave it to her. Well, Faith threw it back up in the lobby area. I have no idea why, But I felt so bad. Shouldn't I have spoken up? I didn't want her to look at me like i was crazy for raising my dog vegan. I know when I have children I am definitely going to have these issues as well.

How "vocal" are you about your veganism?
Were you always that way?
Why do you choose to be vocal or quiet?
What tips do you have for me?

Thank you!!!

For all the people who still think mollusks are "not sentient" or "not animal" or whatever craziness, the BBC has an article up about a species of octopus that uses coconut shells as shelter.

Possibly Off Topic [Monday Dec 14th, 2009]

so feel free to delete, mods

Personally, I'd like to see a coalition formed between these anti-Coca Cola groups and organizations like SHARK that are taking Coke to task for supporting rodeos. Some deeper kind of solidarity between organizations.

In another major victory for the international campaign against Coca-Cola, colleges and universities in Norway have decided not to renew the exclusive contract with Coca-Cola.

Students across Norway have been campaigning to significantly restrict Coca-Cola's contract on campuses because of the company's mismanagement of water resources in India.

Students had argued that Coca-Cola's existing 90% market share on campuses made it difficult for students to exercise their right to buy ethical products on campus.

Shameless Promotion - Smokers' Cleanse [Monday Dec 14th, 2009]

veganpeople

[lavajin]
Smokers' Cleanse

I wanted to let all of you smokers-who-wish-you-were-ex-smokers know about a fully vegan smoking cessation product that actually works. I bought it some time last year and it sat around as I whined and cried about how difficult it would be for me to try to quit again. I finally started taking it about 2 months ago as an "Aw hell I'm broke, I might as well try to quit again" impulse. In the first couple of weeks I still had mad cravings, and I cheated a few times, even bought a pack. Each time I smoked a cigarette while I was on the cleanse, it tasted like utter crap and I couldn't finish it. I also got barely any satisfaction out of those few drags I took. That pack I bought, I gave away after the one half a cigarette I smoked. Oh, and no worries, you can smoke while on this stuff without having a heart attack. You just won't want to after a few attempts.

Now, they say you can safely take the product for up to six months, but after just one box (30 days' worth) I've been fine. In the month I've been finished I've only had a few very mild cravings. I tried so many other products over the years and NOTHING has worked even close to as well as this stuff.

Literally EVERY other time I tried to quit over the 15 years I smoked, cravings were intense and withdrawals were naaaaasty. I quit from 2005-2007 and even after those 2 years I wanted a smoke every day all day. Just 2 months into quitting after using this product and I'm fabulous! Here's the kicker - my Mom smoked for almost 45 years. She'd tried even more methods to quit than I did. She's doing just as well as me after just one box, also!

I swear I'm not getting paid to push this product, I just was really completely amazed by how well it worked for my Mom and me. It doesn't say it on the website, but it is vegan. I'm sorry this is so tl;dr, I'm just that excited that I've finally quit for good!

Oh, eh, and if you google it, you'll find it cheaper. I got it on sale at the local health food store for US$30. (I hope it's available outside of the US!)

[timedecay]
I'm sure something like this has been posted before but I thought people might find it interesting nonetheless. On MSN's front page today is an article called "6 Tips to Build Your Strongest Bones". On the first page when suggesting eating greens they talk about the catch-22 of cow's milk products and how they aren't as beneficial as most people think. Here's the snippet from the article.

Got greens?
Most dairy products that come from cows, such as milk and cheese, have nutritional elements that you want: calcium and protein. But when you consume cow’s milk and its derivatives, there’s a catch. The high protein content in dairy items acidifies the blood, causing the body to draw calcium from the bones to balance it out. The net effect of this is to leach more calcium from the body than you gain.
Additionally, the protein molecules in milk are larger than the molecules a human digestive system is meant to handle, so the immune system may reject them as foreign, or allergenic. That’s why many people experience fatigue, lowered ability to concentrate, and overproduction of mucus when they eat dairy. Some people lack enzymes, such as lactase, to properly digest dairy sugar; for them, consumption of dairy causes stomach pain, gas and diarrhea. For the best protection against osteoporosis, take advantage of the absorbable calcium found in leafy greens, beans and seeds.

bubble teas/ 'pearl milk teas' [Monday Dec 14th, 2009]

veganpeople

[euphoric1dr]
Hi again guys,

Thanks for the feedback re: my last post on the bugs! Means a lot to me.

I forgot to ask this in my last post, but it's something I've been trying to get an answer to.
Here in Taiwan, these bubble tea drinks are very popular; one can find these tea shops absolutely everywhere. I'd really like to try them, however I'm not sure if they have milk or not.

I notice that they usually add POWDER instead of actual MILK to the tea, in fact if you want a kind of 'latte' drink like in Starbucks or other coffee shops, where they add the actual milk together with the coffee/tea, it's usually more expensive. So normally they add these different flavor powders (taro, red bean, vanilla, green tea) to plain black or red tea - and I wondered if that powder has milk? Is it possible to get 'pearl milk tea' without milk, and how could I ask for that?

Well in any case, I have to say what's really great about Asian supermarkets is that you can find plenty of non-dairy beverages, it's great! Soy milk of course, but also almond, rice, peanut, yam, taro, something called job's tears which I have never heard of until coming here, Mung bean. But I'd still like to try the pearl tea!

bugs and pests in the home [Sunday Dec 13th, 2009]

veganpeople

[euphoric1dr]
So I'm currently residing in Taiwan, where there are tons of cockroaches everywhere. I really can't stand cockroaches, but of course I feel terrible killing them...I was talking to a lady here, and she considers herself to be a very strong Buddhist. Yet, she told me its okay to kill them...I was somewhat surprised with this.

There aren't a TON of them, but there are enough of these bugs crawling around my apartment that, well, it does get quite annoying! Can anyone suggest what to do? If I kill the cockroaches with bug spray, is it really that bad?

Would you do the same, be it cockroach, spider, any other huge bug?
I don't know anything about how dangerous etc these bugs are, but they do bite at night so that also gets a little frustrating.

Tempeh question [Saturday Dec 12th, 2009]

veganpeople

[harvestl]
I just opened a thing of tempeh (westsoy company) to make some tex mex tacos, and as I was ripping it up to crumble it, I noticed a lot of little white fuzz everywhere I broke off chunks. There wasn't any on the very outside of the tempeh, I just saw it where I ripped off pieces. It looked like mold, but he expiration date was dec. 26, 2009, it had been in the fridge, and it didn't smell funny. I'll be eating it in about an hour, mold or not, but I just wanted to ask about it. I don't recall ever seeing fuzz in my tempeh, just clean breaks between pieces.

Just a question to create dialogue [Saturday Dec 12th, 2009]

veganpeople

[leastconcern]
So, I recently have been reading a lot of disability rights stuff, and I found that Peter Singer (author of Animal Liberation), was spouting some real pro-eugenics stuff: that disabled children should possibly be the ones donating hearts rather than baboons, and that they are less valuable than healthy animals [Edit: This was actually a quote from a different person, read the wrong line, apologies]. What was actually written by Singer; "We think that some infants with severe disabilities should be killed" and proposed that it be made legal to kill such a child within approximately the first twenty-eight days of life. [No Pity by Shapiro, page 273)

I just wanted to create some dialogue, and see how perhaps some other people try to level [or balance] out the sometimes ableist comments that come from some animal rights activists and AR theorists, and if anyone here who else is disabled and AR feel about this. This is to explore the ablism that can sometimes happen within the AR community.

Edit: Adding the actual book, titled "Should the Baby Live? The Problem of Handicapped Infants" by Peter Singer and Helga Kuhse.

Edit: Just editing on recommendation by the mods to show what the intention of this thread is. Nothing is deleted! The bolding is for highlight, and the italics are for what I added to contextualize it a bit more if it did appear unclear. I apologize that it was not clear beforehand.

Portland Restaurant Reqs? [Friday Dec 11th, 2009]

veganpeople

[unhappenable]
[ mood | determined ]

Hey guys! Just stepping out momentarily from the woodwork to see if anyone has any restaurant suggestions for the downtown Portland, OR area? My work has a sales bonus to burn and, as the only vegan, I've been given the task of finding a modest eating establishment to satisfy both veg and meat eaters alike. I suggested Portland City Grill, but my manager thinks that would be a bit too expensive; she's thinking somewhere between $10 and $15 a meal and drink per person. It has to be downtown so we can all walk from work. I tend to do most of my dining-out in the SE area since I live out there, so I don't really know of any places appropriate for this outing. We also want to keep it as neutral cuisine-wise as possible, so as to appease multiple palates.

I still don't understand why there are so few veg-friendly places downtown... *grumbles*

Thanks in advance!

Careers (sorry for the tl;dr) [Friday Dec 11th, 2009]

veganpeople

[pqowlaks]
I did look through the memories/tags and I'm sure I probably missed something, but I didn't see anything about this, so...

My backstory: I graduated in May with a bachelors degree in Family Studies. My degree is basically useless unless I plan to get a Masters (at least it feels that way!) I had originally intended to go back to get a masters in School Counseling, but honestly, my heart just isn't in it. I already owe $80,000 on student loans and don't really want to rack up a ton more debt for something that just doesn't inspire me.

My question: I have always been interested in a career working with animals (why I didn't go this route in the first place is beyond me) and I'm seriously considering going to school for Animal Studies (or something along these lines... maybe biology? Something to do with animal advocacy?) I'm seriously clueless about the whole thing as I had never even HEARD of an "Animal Studies" degree until today... I am especially interested in anything to do with advocacy!

Has anyone here gone to school to get a degree related to working with animals? (I'm not talking about veterinary or anything medical.) Any advice on how to get started? Good programs? Bad programs? I don't even know... I am clueless! Any help/info is appreciated!! Thanks!

Vegan skin care products [Friday Dec 11th, 2009]

veganpeople

[see_kret_nono]
I am currently in Singapore. And veganism is not popular at all. (organic is slowly catching on, but organic doesn't mean vegan.....)

I was wondering if y'all could help me list out a bunch of skincare products that are vegan.

I basically use just a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and a scrub. (i don't use make up)
I have oily and acne prone skin.

Anyway, if you have any products to recommend, PLEASE list it down!! and i'll go poke around to see if this country has it.

(I have a friend coming over from Toronto, Canada in about a week. So if there's anything good from Toronto, maybe I can ask my friend to get some for me)

THANKS :)
